The Iraqi Federation of Oil Workers (IFOU) is the main opposition to the privatization of oil in the country and is one of few voices speaking out the rights of millions of Iraqi workers. In June 2007, the Union organized a strike which, although short lived, resulted in Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki agreeing to delay the implementation of a controversial oil law until October 2007. Despite heavy pressure from the US, the oil law has not yet passed parliament. Commentators suggest the union represents a large threat to the Bush administration’s goal of privatizating Iraq’s oil.

Oil companies have, naturally enough, extracted the easier-to-reach, cheap oil first. The oil pumped first was on land, near the surface, under pressure, light and 'sweet' (meaning low sulfur content) and therefore easy to refine. The remaining oil is more likely to be off-shore, far from markets, in smaller fields and of lesser quality. It therefore takes ever more money and energy to extract, refine and transport. Under these conditions, the rate of production inevitably drops. Furthermore, all oil fields eventually reach a point where they become economically, and energetically, no longer viable.

Oil has a variety of uses in cooking, most of them based on its ability to transfer heat to the food while remaining stable itself. Asian food is often stir-fried in a little hot oil, just enough to keep the food from sticking to the pan. Chicken can be sautéed or fricasseed in a few tablespoons of oil, while pieces of breaded fish can be fried in shallow oil—perhaps a quarter of an inch deep.

Led by the Iraqi Federation of Oil Unions (IFOU), hundreds of Iraqis took to the streets to protest the proposed hydrocarbon law and a hike in fuel prices. The IFOU ... called on Parliament to legalize trade unions and to establish workers’ rights. Observers charge that the draft law would not serve the interests of the Iraqi people, as it would divert oil revenues from Iraq’s economy to foreign companies.

Oil prices in America are incredibly realistic in comparison to oil prices in countries such as Norway, where oil is $6.00 a gallon. This is proof of the deep curruption present in the Norwegian government. Europe in general cannot afford to have an oil addiction for this very reason. The EU (and its brazen disregard for human rights) are trying to discourage addiction to oil - a natural born right of every human being on the planet(except for the Chinese).
