Oedipus: Queen Jocasta
built 654 days ago
Oedipus leaves the home of the woman whom he mistakenly believes to be his mother. But ... much Jocasta and Oedipus try to manipulate the situation, mother and son are fated, doomed.
Oedipus himself, as portrayed in the myth, did in no way suffer from this neurosis – at least, not towards Jocasta, whom he only met as an adult. (If anything, such feelings would have been directed at Merope – but there is no hint of that.) However, Freud reasoned that the ancient Greek audience, which heard the story told or saw the plays based on it, did know that Oedipus was actually killing his father and marrying his mother; the story being continually told and played therefore reflected a preoccupation with the theme.
Oedipus and Jocasta realised that fulfilment of the horrible oracle had occurred. To his horror, Oedipus realised that he had killed his father and married his mother. Unable to deal with it, Jocasta hanged herself, while Oedipus put out his own eyes.
In Woody Allen's Mighty Aphrodite, Jocasta, played by Olympia Dukakis, talks about the events as Oedipus stumbles around in the background, adding, "I hate to tell you what they call my son in Harlem", after the chorus leader (F. Murray Abraham) notes that the murder started an entire psychiatric profession. During the end credits, Oedipus necks with Jocasta.

The messenger then dropped the bomb on him -- He informed Oedipus that Queen Merope of Corinth was not his real mother and that he was adopted as a baby. When Oedipus pressed him for details on how he knew this, the messenger replied that he was the one who had delivered him to his royal parents. He had gotten him from some shepherd who had found him wailing, with his feet pierced and bound, way up on Mount Cithaeron.

Eventually, Oedipus and Jocasta found out what had really happened. (You must assume that accidentally killing your father and marrying your mother is a disaster.) Jocasta committed suicide, and Oedipus blinded himself and became a wandering beggar.
