Oedipus: Queen Jocasta

Oedipus was the man who doubled back on his own life to beget children. Oedipus has shrunk time and become his father, himself and his own children. Jocasta, as a descendent of the sown men, a union of the dragon’s teeth with Earth, is a manifestation of the goddess Earth. According to Hesiod in Theogony, after Earth, the source of zoë, was born from Chaos, she gave birth to Ouranos. Then she coupled with Ouranos, her own son, to beget many children. Thus Ouranos is the first to couple with his mother.

In an effort to discover the murderer, Oedipus sends for the blind seer, Tiresias. Under protest the prophet names Oedipus himself as the criminal. Oedipus, outraged at the accusation, denounces it as a plot of Creon to gain the throne. Jocasta appears just in time to avoid a battle between the two men. Seers, she assures Oedipus, are not infallible. In proof, she cites the old prophecy that her son should kill his father and have children by his mother.

Oedipus says, "It's time to clear this up. Send for the other shepherd." Jocasta realizes exactly what has happened. Jocasta begs Oedipus NOT to pursue the matter. Oedipus says he has to know. (If Oedipus wasn't so intent on getting to the truth, there'd be no play.) Jocasta runs out horribly upset.

Now blind and truly wretched, Oedipus abandoned the throne of Thebes to Creon, the brother of the late queen, and went into self-imposed exile. His dutiful daughters, Antigone and Ismene, followed him to the end. Staff in hand, Oedipus himself was ... the answer to the riddle of the Sphinx.

In Hamlet it's Fortinbras and in Oedipus Tyrannus it's Jocasta's brother Creon who comes in to clean up the mess. Oedipus renounces his throne transferring its power to Creon whose responsibility it becomes to punish the person responsible for the Theban pollution (in other words, Oedipus).

When Jocasta runs off the stage, Oedipus thinks she is afraid he will be proven a peasant. Why does this idea make him so happy (1076ff) ? And how does Jocasta seem to you now?
