Oedipus: King Laius
built 642 days ago
Whom does Oedipus believe are his parents and where does he think he was born (774-775)? Why did Oedipus go to the Delphic Oracle and what was he told there (779-793)? Where did Oedipus arrive as a result of this information (798-799)? What happened at this place (801-813)? What does Oedipus fear (813-822)? Does Oedipus suspect at this point that Laius is his father and Jocasta, his mother (822-827)?

The Sphinx and Oedipus When a son Oedipus (Oidipous) was born to the royal couple, Laïus learned from the oracle that his son will one day kill him and have children by his mother. Horrified of the possible future, he ordered his shepherd to expose the infant child in the mountain. The shepherd... didn't have the courage to abandon the infant in the wild, gave Oedipus to Merope or Periboea, wife of Polybus, the king of Corinth. They brought up Oedipus in Corinth as if the child were their own.
Midway between Delphi and Thebes in Focus deme and at the crossroads to Thebes and the small town of Daulia is where Oedipus killed his father, and Mt. Parnassos looming to the west. Oedipus had just come from Delphi and received the oracle that he would one day kill his father and marry his mother. He then refused to return to Corinth and followed the road east instead where he had a confrontation over the right of way. The place is called the Cleft Way and resides at the foot of Magus Hill. At this narrow gap between hills, Oedipus would not give way to an oncoming chariot, so Laius struck him with a two headed goad and Oedipus flew into a murderous rage, killing not only Laius but three of his four companions.

Oedipus and the Sphinx Rather than comforting Oedipus, her words began to worry him and to plant some seeds of doubt in his mind. He began asking all sorts of questions from his wife: Where did the murder occur? Which crossroad? How long before he had arrived to Thebes? What did Laius look like?

Like Laius and Jocasta, Oedipus was determined to avoid the destiny predicted for him. Believing that the oracle had said he was fated to kill Polybus and marry Merope, he vowed never to return to Corinth. Instead, he headed toward Thebes.
The child Oedipus is born to the royal couple, Laius and Jocasta, but a grim prophecy hangs over the Theban palace. The old king is warned that his son will kill him. In order to thwart fate, Laius and Jocasta abandon the infant Oedipus, with his feet bound, to starve on a barren mountainside.
