The Odyssey is an example of Greek history portrayed in literature. As in all Greek literature, the epic hero Odysseus answers a call to action, suffers through great confrontation, and returns with a better understanding of life. Greek stories such as, The Odyssey set the stage for today's modern action movies with epic heroes such as Indiana Jones, Frodo from the Lord of the Rings, and Western cowboys like Roy Rogers and The Lone Ranger.

In Sweden, an Odyssey clone called Kanal 34 was advertised in 1975 but no specimen has surfaced so far. The advertisement shows a different unit, but same Odyssey controllers, cartridges and overlays. However, one ITT Odyssee was found there in Sweden with four manuals: the two original german ones and two others in swedish. This specimen is believed to have been purchased in 1976/77 by its original owner, which is quite late for that game, but not surprising for the video game market of that time. It is unknown whether Kanal 34 was an early name for an ITT Odyssee import as it may well have been a different, unreleased model.

Nearly all modern editions and translations of the Odyssey are divided into 24 books. This division is convenient but not original; it was developed by Alexandrian editors of the 3rd century BC. In the Classical period... several of the books (individually and in groups) were given their own titles: the first four books, focusing on Telemachus, are commonly known as the Telemachy; Odysseus' narrative, Book 9, featuring his encounter with the cyclops Polyphemus, is traditionally called the Cyclopeia; and Book 11, the section describing his meeting with the spirits of the dead is known as the Nekuia. Books 9 through 12, wherein Odysseus recalls his adventures for his Phaeacian hosts, are collectively referred to as the Apologoi: Odysseus' "stories." Book 22, wherein Odysseus kills all the suitors, has been given the title Mnesterophonia: "slaughter of the suitors."

In Germany, Odyssey was exported in two versions. It was first announced in late 1973 as being sold by ITT Schaub-Lorentz. Very few ITT units were made. The box was different, and the papers and game cards were translated to German. The console was ... renamed Odyssee and its shipping box had two large ITT stickers covering the original Magnavox logos. These stickers are almost never found on Odyssee shipping boxes because they did not stick well over the years due to the quality of the glue used; they left almost black surfaces on the shipping box, allowing to see the original "Magnavox", "Odyssey", "1TL200" and "Made in USA" words.

The name "Odyssey" was chosen as the title for the theme year project because of its identification with Homer's epic tale of Odysseus. This mythical Greek hero's years of wandering have come to symbolize a voyage of discovery and adventure. Each year CSULB students and members of the community have the unique opportunity to engage in their own "intellectual" voyage of discovery and adventure by taking courses, attending guest lectures and performances, and participating in field trips and collaborative experiences.
