Odysseus
built 231 days ago
Although Odysseus is married to Penelope, it was well known that he was first a suitor to her cousin, Helen of Troy. Helen was known for her amazing beauty. She had so many suitors, in fact, that her father feared the wrath of her dismissed suitors in the eventuality that she chose a husband. Odysseus solved this problem by having every suitor take an oath to defend Helen’s chosen husband. When the suitors, including Odysseus, took this oath, Helen chose Menelaus. Afterwards, Odysseus chose Penelope as his mate.

Odysseus Odysseus was one of the Greek kings who went to Troy and came back a hero. He was ruling the small island of Ithaka when he was asked by the Atreidae to join forces with them on the expedition to recover Helen. The portrayal of Odysseus in the Iliad marked the beginning of his literary career. As he moved through time, additional elements of his character were emphasized and extrapolated upon, but all the seeds for later development can be seen in the Iliad. Did the depiction of the Iliadic character of Odysseus change in subsequent literature? And how was he portrayed in later Greek tragedies?

During his stay with his lover, Circe, Odysseus had three sons - Agrius, Latinus and Telegonus. In one story, Telegonus one day went to search for his father, landing in Ithaca. Odysseus thought Telegonus was an intruder, and went out to drive the young man off his island. Telegonus unwittingly killed his father. As Teiresias had foretold, Odysseus' death had come from the sea.
As great as he was, Odysseus still had some weaknesses that prolonged his voyage back to Ithaca. His most important weakness that he possess is that of his pride. Pride is good to have, but in Odysseus' case he had to much of it. This is clearly evident in the episode on the cyclopes' island. When Odysseus and his men are clearly safe away from the island Odysseus braggs about his exploit. Polythemus hears this and hurls giant boulders in the direction of the ship. A couple came very close to sinking the ship.
Odysseus came to the Underworld in order to meet the seer Tiresias and learn about the outcome of his wanderings. It was the witch Circe who gave Odysseus this task, and the instructions as to how to do it. She ... sent the wind who carried Odysseus' ship to the farthest realm of Oceanus, allowing him and his crew to find the Grove of Persephone that Circe had indicated. Circe instructed Odysseus to go to a rock which is located in the place where the rivers Pyriphlegethon (or Phlegethon) and Cocytus flow into Acheron. In that place Odysseus dug a pit around which he poured a libation to all the dead, first with honey and milk, then with wine, and finally with water. Then, having sprinkled white barley over the libation, he invocated the spirits of the dead, and after the invocation he cut the throats of a ram and an ewe. Then the souls of the dead came gathering about the pit.
Odysseus is ... a character in David Gemmell's Troy trilogy. In the first book he's a very good friend and mentor of Helikaon. He is known as the ugly king of Itaca due to his appearance. His wife didn't love him at first but due to her loyalty she grew to respect him and maybe even love him. He's also a famous story teller, known to exaggerate his stories to make them sound better heralded as the greatest story teller of his age. In the series, he is depicted as an older man during his escapades in the Trojan War, and an unwilling ally of Agamemnon.
