UPI Logo Obstetrics deals with a high-risk pregnancy population and provides excellent educational opportunities for both student and resident. Specialty clinics in endocrinology, complicated pregnancy, cancer, pre- and postoperative evaluation and family planning provide specific, specialized areas of instruction in addition to serving large numbers of patients. Cancer detection and therapy play a major part in the gynecologic program.
Residents have graduated degrees of responsibility during their time on Obstetrics. First-year residents focus on normal deliveries: intrapartum management (vaginal deliveries, forceps, vacuum extractions, and primary cesarean sections), and antepartum and postpartum care. There is an ultrasound rotation during the first year. Second-year residents deal primarily with high-risk obstetrics. They admit and manage patients with hypertension, diabetes, hemoglobinopathies, and other medical complications. There are perinatal study rooms on both KCHC and UHB obstetrical wards, which accommodate ultrasound and antepartum testing.

[T]hese generalists are most often not trained in the surgical aspects of obstetrics, nor have they been trained in gynaecology, and as such, they should not be confused with residency trained and board-certified OB/GYNs. All gynaecologists, therefore, are trained obstetricians, although the reverse is not necessarily true. However, some OB/GYNs may choose to drop the obstetric component of their practice and focus solely on gynaecology, especially as they get older. This decision is often based on the double burden of very late hours and, depending on the country, high rates of litigation.
The Department of Family Medicine provides one position yearly for advanced training in obstetrics. The applicant must have completed a three-year Family Medicine residency in Knoxville. The fellowship provides instruction in operative obstetrics (C-sections and post-partum tubal ligation) and management of pregnancy, labor and delivery for Family Medicine residents interested in providing those services, often in rural areas.
