The Division of Obstetrics is an academically and clinically active service. Approximately 2,300 patients are delivered annually at University Hospital of Brooklyn (50% service), and 4,000 at KCHC (100% service). Residents provide the care to the patients in conjunction with midwives, medical students, midwifery students, and physician assistant students. Care is supervised by a team of attendings, which includes five specialists in maternal-fetal medicine. All resident clinics have perinatologists in attendance, and attending rounds are made with house staff on a daily basis.

Gynecology is the branch of medicine that includes examination, diagnosis, and medical and surgical treatment of conditions that afflict the reproductive systems of women.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sinai has a full-time chairman, program directors,and Board-certified faculty in all generalist and subspecialty areas. There is a well-trained group of full-time generalists in obstetrics and gynecology along with many voluntary staff members who have a strong interest in resident education. All members of the department are committed to teaching the skills necessary for certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

In the July 2006 issue of American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, researchers reported that when comparing a contraceptive vaginal ring with an oral contraceptive, the ring does not pose a higher risk of causing a blood clot. On the other hand, research on the patch revealed a different level of blood clot safety. In September 2006, the US Food and Drug Administration updated the warning label on the Ortho Evra transdermal contraceptive patch, cautioning users about the higher risk of blood clots associated with its use. The study, commissioned by drug manufacturer Johnson and Johnson, revealed that patch users faced twice the risk of clots in the legs and lungs compared to women taking traditional birth-control pills. Dr. Daniel Shames, the acting deputy director of FDA's Office of Drug Evaluation in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said, “Blood clots occurring in the legs or lungs are serious and rare events that are a potential risk for all hormonal contraceptive therapies.”

The Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency began at Mayo Clinic in Rochester in 1919, and since that time, more than 330 physicians have completed training. It is anticipated that four residents will complete training in this program annually.

The Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine is highly regarded for its commitment to education. With the creation of the Division of Education several years ago, the department became one of the few residency programs in the nation that intertwines medicine and education through blended M.D. and Ph.D. efforts. The education division plans, implements, and evaluates all components of graduate education for its residents.
