The Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is a nonprofit organization of physicians that encourages and promotes the study of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women's Health Care. Member physicians represent over 1000 physicians from 29 states. Each year, the Central Association (CAOG) hosts an annual meeting that updates member physicians about current medical advances.

From 2000 through 2004, American medical students were increasingly choosing not to specialize in obstetrics (see Bower 2003). This led to a critical shortage of obstetricians in some states and often, fewer health care options for women - although it did lead to higher average salaries, as an article by Medical Economics points out. [1]. However, beginning in 2004, increasing state legislation mandating tort reform combined with the ACGME's decision to limit resident work hours lead to a gradual resurgence in the number of medical students choosing OB/GYN as a specialty. In the medical residency match for 2007, only six spots in OB/GYN training programs remained vacant throughout the entire United States; a record low number, and one that puts OB/GYN on-par in terms of competitiveness with other surgical specialties. Because every labor and delivery is different, the new obstetrics wing was designed to support alternative birthing methods. For women who prefer natural childbirth, a water tub is available during labor to help relieve pain. For those who want to block the pain with an epidural, an OB-dedicated anesthesiologist is available 24-7. And, women who need Cesarean sections don’t have to dread entering a cold and claustrophobic operating room. All c-sections will take place in a spacious and inviting room with large windows that filter in natural light. Perhaps most exciting, says Fabean, is the new Level 2 Special Care Nursery, which means that the hospital is fully-equipped to care for most of the premature or sick newborns who, in the past, had to be transferred to another hospital.

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology is comprised of a diverse faculty committed to the broad, integrated medical and surgical care of women's health throughout their lifespan. The faculty participates in the educational, research and service goals of the College of Human Medicine to enhance understanding of reproductive physiology, including the physiologic, social, cultural, environmental and genetic factors that influence women's health.
