Oberon was born Timothy Zell on November 30, 1942, in St Louis, Missouri--a Sagittarian with Aquarius rising. As a child he had a natural affinity with the creatures of Nature and spent much of his time alone in the woods. His early attunement to Nature contributed to the emergence of psychic abilities, including the gift of telepathy. He was introspective and read a wide range of literature, including various works of science fiction and fantasy.

[One] sign of Oberon's growing political maturity is Grimm's attitude to the nearby Elysian Fields. Though Oberon seems to be approaching the stage that Circinus reached two centuries ago--that of a viable nation-state supported in part by piracy--Grimm appears to be seeking the respectability that standard interstellar trade will bring. Thus, Grimm's pirates are not allowed to raid the Elysian worlds. Indeed, Hendrik has entered into trade and territorial agreements with them, the most important of which offers Grimm's navy docking rights in return for military protection against the many other Bandit Kingdoms in the area. As the Elysian Fields continue to develop, and ... become more tempting targets, ties between the two realms can be expected to grow closer. The potential for provincial unification-- similar to that which led to the foundation of the Free Worlds League and Capellan Confederation seven centuries ago--may become irresistible to the leaders of both realms.

Entering in the Golden Lion Throne Room, Oberon found the Emperor alone, after having asked his guests and other officials to leave the room, with his Truthsayer, Gaius Helen Mohiam present. Before Oberon's Navigator Tank casing was drawn back to reveal him, Mohiam was told that "the Bene Gesserit witch must leave" by one of the Entourage. She did so, making Shaddam truly alone, but, upon leaving the room, sat down and focused her awareness so that she could feel the situation in the room. Oberon's tank was then opened, revealing his floating form to the now slightly reviled Emperor. To begin with, Oberon remarked, fairly casually, that they had just folded space from Ix. Shaddam replied in suite, asking how their journey was. Oberon instead said that he thought there were many new fangled machines

The Oberon language comes in two variants, the original Oberon language, and Oberon-2, an extension which allows type-bound procedures. Object oriented programming is supported by Oberon as well as by Oberon-2. Oberon-2 has some additional convenience for object oriented programming, but with some cost in terms of performance and flexibility. For a discussion of object oriented Oberon-2 type bound programming style versus "classical" Oberon style, see [Marais 1996a]. As of today (Oct. 98) most Oberon compilers support Oberon-2.

Despite everything he has seen, Oberon retains an obstinate skepticism about the fantastic people he meets and predicaments that seem to occur on a daily basis with Mister Miracle and the League. Sarcasm is his way of dealing with most situations. Although he's Billy Goat Gruff personified, most people, especially those of the opposite sex, find him charming — irresistible, even. A relationship between Oberon and fellow Leaguer Fire has been intimated. For all his bravado, when confronted with a woman as brazen as she is, Oberon shies away.

The language Oberon was born out of the ambition to simplify language to the essentials. The result turned out to be a considerably more powerful and more elegant language than its predecessors The defining report of Pascal required 30 pages, that of Modula grew to 45 pages, Oberon&"s could do with 16 [12]. Not surprisingly, implementations profited substantially from this achievement after 25 years of experience in language design, from a continuous evolution.
