The agency published a proposed rule on the voluntary nutrition labeling program in the Federal Register of March 20, 2002. It then established a comment period until 3 June 2005, to allow all interested parties the opportunity to review the proposals.

The amounts of vitamins and minerals are listed as a Percent Daily Value on the nutrition label. The Percent Daily Value for vitamins and minerals gives a general idea of how much of a vitamin or mineral a serving contributes to the total daily diet. For example, if the Percent Daily Value for vitamin C of all the foods you eat in a day adds up to 100%, your diet meets the recommendation for vitamin C.

The new food label format offers more complete, useful and accurate nutrition information than has been available in the past. Shoppers are now able to compare the nutritional value of every packaged food on the grocery shelf.
