Early workers in human nutrition focused on the minimum amounts needed to prevent or cure acute deficiency diseases, such as scurvy and beriberi. Students are accepted into the nutrition program from science and nonscience backgrounds. Applicants should have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and course work in anatomy and physiology, organic chemistry or introductory biochemistry, and basic nutrition. The final two papers consider the current state of nutrition interventions and how they could be implemented at scale at national and global levels. The fourth paper in the Series assesses actions in the 20 countries hit hardest by undernutrition. The paper charges nutrition leaders at the country level to review their existing strategies to ensure that priority is given to effective interventions targeting pregnant women and children less than 2 years of age, and to develop strategies for increasing public demand for these interventions and delivering them at scale.
