Nunavut is made up of the central and eastern parts of the former NWT. These are the traditional lands of Inuit who live in the Canadian North above the tree linelands their ancestors lived on for thousands of years. The Nunavut population is 85 percent Inuit.

The population of Nunavut is by far the youngest among the provinces. Nunavut's median age was 22.1 years in 2001. The national average was 37.6. Young people age 19 and under accounted for 47 percent of the province's population. Seniors over age 65 accounted for only 2 percent. At the national level, 13 percent of the population is over age 65.

Nunavut is battling a problem with teen suicide. Since April 1, 1999, 128 people (in a population of only 28,000) have taken their own lives, most of them young men (14 to 24) with "romantic problems", according to psychologist Michael Kral (Nunatsiaq News, Nov. 7, 2003).

The region now known as Nunavut has supported a continuous population for approximately 4000 years. Most historians ... identify the coast of Baffin Island with the Helluland described in Norse sagas, so it is possible that the inhabitants of the region had occasional contact with Norse sailors.

Iqaluit is the largest community in Nunavut. It has a population of 3,600 and is located approximately 2,000 kilometres from Ottawa. The mean temperature in January is -30°C and in July is 15°C. Iqaluit experiences 24 hours of daylight per day in June, and six hours per day in December.
