The Government of Nunavut lets residents of the territory decide themselves how they want to meet these challenges. The government has similar powers as those of the NWT government. It has an elected legislative assembly, a cabinet and a territorial court. The capital of Nunavut is Iqaluit on Baffin Island.

The written history of Nunavut begins in 1576. Martin Frobisher, while leading an expedition to find the Northwest Passage, thought he had discovered gold ore around the body of water now known as Frobisher Bay on the coast of Baffin Island.[7] The ore turned out to be worthless, but Frobisher made the first recorded European contact with the Inuit. The contact was hostile, with Frobisher capturing four Inuit people and bringing them back to England, where they quickly perished.

Nunavut was formerly a part of the Northwest Territories until 1999, when it became a separate territory. Nunavut is the largest political subdivision in Canada, with 18 percent of the total area of the country. Nunavut has a total area of 708,434 square miles (1.83 million square kilometers), about eight times the size of the United Kingdom.

The aforementioned regional divisions are distinct from the district system of dividing the Northwest Territories that dated to 1876 and was abolished when Nunavut was created. Nunavut encompasses the entirety of the old District of Keewatin (which had differing boundaries from the Keewatin/Kivalliq regions), the majority of the District of Franklin and a small portion of the District of Mackenzie.

The first flag hoisted over Nunavut will likely be returned to the territorial assembly following a journey to Saint John, New Brunswick. As the legislative assembly was not complete at the time of the creation of the territory on 1 April 1999, the legislators held their first session in the local high school. When the legislature left the school, the original flag was left behind and ended up in the garbage and rescued by Brian Carey. Carey moved to Saint John and took the flag with him. As of 11 May, 2006 the was hanging in his art store, and spotted by Wendy Thomas, an employee of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

The annual amount that Nunavut receives through the formula financing arrangement is not a fixed amount. It changes according to the country's overall economic performance and health, Nunavuts tax revenues and the annual change in the territory's population relative to the rest of the country.
