Numerology is the delusion that numbers have power over events. It is a descendent of number mysticism, the belief the contemplation of numbers can give mystical and non-rational insights into life, the universe and everything. 2500 years ago, Pythagoras originated number mysticism, crediting certain numbers with characteristics, through numerology, is a more recent invention that allots numbers, hence characteristics, to individuals. Underwood Dudley outlines here the history of number mysticism and numerology and gives many examples, including biorhythyms, Bible-numberists, pyramidologists and a plethora of others. His message is that numbers do indeed have power, but over minds not events. This is the only book that exposes this particular human folly, and requires no mathematical background beyond knowledge of numbers.

The most extensive Numerology review to date has appeared in the January issue of KEYS Magazine. You can hear the track that Uwe Hoenig created for his review here. He writes: Numerology and Reaktor : This track accompanied the review of Numerology 1.2 in the German magazine KEYS. It was cut together from a longer live performance. Numerology was used to sequence a Reaktor ensemble with a MemoryDrum instrument, a small FM bass synth and a simple sampler with variable loop length. A faderbox was used to control various parameters in realtime.

The use of Numerology featured heavily at the recent Warning Signal : Audio Interface show at the Center for Contemporary Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico on November 23rd 2003. Three of the five performing groups at this show used Numerology live, including the duo of Jim Coker (Numerology author) and Jason Fink (on guitar), Brian Bixby of Keep Adding, and Eric Williamson (a.k.a Suit and Tie Guy). Mr. Williamson even had the nerve to use a beta version of Numerology 1.3, incorporating the Groove Clock and Matrix Sequencer into his set. These three sequencing nuts were joined by IN_TENSE (a.k.a Steve Mason of Santa Fe, NM) and the live-sampling mayhem of C.K. Barlow of Albuquerque, NM. Numerology charts are made up of the following numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 22. In order to determine which number applies to you, you must add up the digits that make up your birth date or name. This sum is further reduced by consequently adding up the resulting digits until a single digit answer (or the numbers 11 or 22) is achieved. If at anytime during the equation, you come up with the numbers 11 or 22, you do not need to reduce them. The most important aspect of Numerology is determining your Life Path, which involves adding up the digits of your birth date. The example to the right explains further how to add up your digits.
