Nova Scotia: Halifax Foundation
built 657 days ago
The Atlantic shore of Nova Scotia is deeply indented with many small harbors. It is a good example of a drowned coastline, the land having been depressed by the weight of the ice during the last glacial period. Halifax and Lunenburg, centers of the fishing industry, are located on deep inlets on the coast. The tides of the Bay of Fundy are among the highest in the world. The difference between high tide and low tide may be as much as 16 m (53 ft).
Nova Scotia stamp issued 1860. Nova Scotia no longer has any incorporated cities, as they were amalgamated into Regional Municipalities in 1996. Halifax, the provincial capital, is now part of the Halifax Regional Municipality, as is Dartmouth, formerly the province's second largest city. The former city of Sydney is now part of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
Powered By Mapeze Technology Halifax International Airport is the starting point for most travellers arriving in Nova Scotia by air. Located in Halifax the airport serves as the major entry point for tourists arriving from Europe, the United States and other parts of Canada. A bus service connects the metro area with other parts of the province. Four travelways converge here: the Marine Drive, Evangeline Trail, Glooscap Trail and Lighthouse Route.
Manufacturing is the largest sector of Nova Scotia's economy. In addition to the iron and steel produced at Sydney, the province's manufactures include processed food (especially fish), automobiles, tires, sugar, and construction materials. In addition to its all-year port facilities, Halifax is a railroad terminus. There are both hydroelectric and tidal (at Annapolis Royal) power-generating plants. Coast, countryside, and historical sites attract tourists.

The Halifax Foundation is the only community foundation in Nova Scotia, serving the whole of the Halifax Regional Municipality and representing it in the Canadian Capital Cities Organization. The Halifax Foundation differs from most other charitable organizations in that it customarily invests capital contributions and spends only from earnings, rather than capital, in this way guaranteeing performance forever of the purpose(s) sought by donor(s). All of the Halifax Foundation's Directors are volunteers, appointed by a committee of the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, Chief Justice of Nova Scotia, Mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality, Deputy Minister of Justice of Nova Scotia, and the President of the Metropolitan Halifax Chamber of Commerce.
