Notre Dame Football: Teams

The parents of a Notre Dame swimming team member killed in January in a bus crash filed a wrongful death lawsuit today against the bus company and the driver. Gordon and Kathy Beeler of Granger, Ind., filed the lawsuit in St. Joseph Circuit Court on behalf of their daughter, Margaret (Meghan) Beeler.

The most generally accepted explanation is that the press coined the nickname as a characterization of Notre Dame athletic teams, their never-say-die fighting spirit and the Irish qualities of grit, determination and tenacity. The term likely began as an abusive expression tauntingly directed toward the athletes from the small, private, Catholic institution. Notre Dame alumnus Francis Wallace popularized it in his New York Daily News columns in the 1920s.

The last game Rockne coached was on December 14, 1930 when he led a group of Notre Dame All Stars against the New York Giants in New York City. The game raised funds for the Mayor's Relief Committee for the Unemployed and Needy of the city. Fifty-thousand fans turned out to see the reunited "Four Horsemen" along with players from Rockne's other championship teams take the field against the pros.[12]

If you're a true college gridiron fan... you don't have to limit your support to Notre Dame. Fans looking for games closer to home or interested in other top NCAA football teams can typically find good tickets for games on eBay. Buying college football tickets at auction online allows people who may not have had the foresight to pick up tickets in advance to attend games they might otherwise have ended up watching on the small screen at home.

Hornung earned the nickname “Golden Boy” back when he won the 1956 Heisman Trophy at Notre Dame (becoming the only player on a losing team to do so). By the time he had become a star with the Green Bay Packers he was truly living up to the name. There’s a passage in David Maraniss’ excellent 1999 biography of Vince Lombardi, When Pride Still Mattered (buy it over to the right, and give FO a boost at the same time!), that gives a good account of Hornung’s off-field life in Green Bay:
