Notre Dame Football: Charlie Weis
built 634 days ago
Leahy played tackle at Notre Dame in 1929 and 1930 but suffered a torn knee cartilage early in the 1931 season, ending his playing career. It was actually good fortune, for Coach Knute Rockne liked Leahy, sat next to him on the bench, and shared football knowledge with him. When Rockne had to go to the Mayo Clinic for an operation after the season, he took Leahy with him for his knee operation and they shared a room for two weeks.
"Charlie Weis has returned Notre Dame to relevancy. Just two years ago, as Notre Dame spiraled toward mediocrity under Ty Willingham, a shot at a national title seemed improbable. But the schemes and the discipline Weis has installed have revived past glories. The only question on the Irish offense comes on the line. But considering the way Weis turned castoff linemen into solid starters with the New England Patriots, that should not be a huge concern."—New York Times, Aug. 27, 2006

Weis ... became the first Irish coach to suffer five straight defeats since Hugh Devore did it in 1963, also the last season Notre Dame lost to Navy. Devore was sacked at the end of the year.
Notre Dame's helmets are solid gold with gray facemasks, the gold being emblematic of the University's famed "Golden Dome." It is a Notre Dame tradition for the team's student managers to spray-paint the team's helmets prior to each game, ensuring that they keep their gold shine each week. The paint contains actual gold.
While some on the current list were recent national champions, not all (such as Notre Dame) have been. Clearly, people who follow college football base their preferences on more than just a team’s success. Other factors play an important role as well.
Notre Dame turned in not only the worst performance of the Weis era, but perhaps the three regimes before him. While Tyrone Willingham lost to Michigan by an identical score four years ago, a more devastating defeat hasn't come since Gerry Faust's 58-7 humiliation suffered at the hands of Miami in 1985.
