  4. The Last Samurai -- Edward Zwick
    Much like Master and Commander before it, The Last Samurai is a courageous endeavor that ultimately doesn't have the gumption to trust in its own genius. Maybe Zwick and Company thought they were being too subtle, and wanted to ensure all of their sound and fury signified something at the end of the day. Or, maybe The Powers That Be doubted their audience's ability to understand the not-so-complicated messages (involving honor, and "old ways" -vs- "new") with which they were dabbling.

    Schubert’s songs are among the greatest ever written. They are all settings of German poems. German art songs are called Lieder (pronounced “leader”), and Schubert made his Lieder very special by making the piano accompaniments describe the action of the songs in many different ways. That night, much of Bishkek was leafleted with an appeal to show up the next day for an anti-Akayev march on the White House.
