Nostradamus: Prophecies
built 657 days ago
At fifty years in age, Nostradamus finally settled into semi-retirement in the town of Salon where he married and concentrated on his writings, producing annual almanacs and books of prophecy. He is said to have foreseen the rise and fall of Napoleon and Hitler, the assassination of the Kennedys, and perhaps the advent of the third World War. However, there is debate as to the volume of writings he produced and the interpretation of the works that have survived through the ages. Nostradamus himself mentions that he burnt many of his books once he finished them, but this seems unlikely given the profound dedication to his work over the course of his life. Rather, this was probably an attempt to mislead Church authorities and to potentially conceal important prophetic books for a later time when they would be truly useful to humanity.

About 1550, Nostradamus moved to Salon, where he began to write his prophecies. The publication of Centuries increased his fame, bringing many people to visit him in Salon during the rest of his life. Catherine de Medicis, queen of France, asked him to plot the horoscopes of her husband, King Henry II, and their children. In 1560, King Charles IX of France appointed Nostradamus court physician.

Nostradamus prophecy is pop culture at its best! Whenever world events reach a fevered pitch, people rush to the tabloids to see what the notorious 16th Century "prophet" had to say. Following the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, Nostradamus quickly became one of the most popular search queries on the Internet. Immediately, claims circulated via email that Nostradamus predicted everything that happened. How did Nostradamus become such a cult figure?

Advocates of Nostradamus usually translate the second line of this stanza to read: "The greater part of the battlefield will be against Hitler." They argue that "Hister" was just a code name for Hitler! The fact of the matter is that Hister was a geographical term for the Lower Danube River. In contrast, when a true prophet of God, Isaiah, prophesied that the children of Israel would be released from Babylonian captivity by a man named Cyrus - he meant Cyrus (Isaiah 44:28). And that prophecy was given 150 years before Cyrus came to power!

By 1555 Nostradamus had finished the first phase of his book that would contain his prophecies. Upon its publication, Nostradamus' fame quickly spread throughout Europe. The book contained only the first three Centuries and part of the fourth. His book became very popular among the literate and educated Europeans of the day, so much so that the French Queen, Catherine de' Medici, summoned Nostradamus to her court in Paris in 1556..

According to legend, Nostradamus kept much of his work secret at first, for fear of being dragged before the Inquisition as a witch. Eventually, he decided that his gift was more important than his fear, and he published his prophecies beginning in 1555. The church did eventually condemn him as a heretic, but they had the courtesy to wait until after his death in 1566.
