Nostradamus: France
built 657 days ago
Nostradamus died in Salon, France, in 1566. Many translations of his Centuries and treatises on their significance appeared in the generations following his death. They remain popular to the present day. Some critics point out that the verses are vague and can be read in many ways. Other interpreters claim Nostradamus predicted Adolf Hitler's (1889–1945) rise to power, the explosion of the U.S. space shuttle Challenger in 1986, and many other events.
In 1522, at the age of nineteen, Nostradamus decided to study medicine and enrolled at Mont Pellier (the most famous school of medicine in France). He graduated with a bachelor degree and was soon licensed to practice medicine. As a healer, he was active in treating the victims of the "Black Plague" and developed unique and effective methods of treatment which helped to lessen the suffering of many people.
For the next several years Nostradamus traveled through southern Europe. By 1544 heavy rains were again helping to spread the plague to southern France. With his medicinal practices, Nostradamus managed to halt the spread of disease in one town. He was again celebrated for his skills.
The reigning king of France, Henry II summoned Nostradamus to his court and asked the prophet to explain this vision. Nostradamus explained the King will be killed in a jousting tournament. Henry laughed at the idea. He would never participate in such a tournament. But the King did joust in a tournament against the Count Gabriel Montgomery. During the match, the Count's jousting staff slipped off the Kings chest of armor and embedded itself in his eyes, through an armored helmet made of gold.

Perhaps the most famous of the Renaissance astrological treatises are the “centuries”of Nostradamus, first published in 1555. Each “centuries” was a group of 100 rhymed prophetic quatrains. Nostradamus won lasting fame in 1559 when King Henry II of France died in a manner supposedly predicted in the “Centuries” as follows:
