Nostradamus: Books
built 202 days ago
Nostradamus was not only a diviner, but a professional healer, too. It is known that he wrote at least two books on medical science. One was an alleged "translation" of Galen, and in his so-called Traité des fardemens (basically a medical cookbook containing, once again, materials borrowed mainly from others), he included a description of the methods he used to treat the plague — none of which, not even the bloodletting, apparently worked. The same book ... describes the preparation of cosmetics.

James Randi in his expositive book “The Mask of Nostradamus” points out that the French have never used the lion as a symbol of monarchy. Their animal symbol was the fighting cock.

After becoming famous for his treatments, Nostradamus was invited to study with the noted arcane scholar and physician of an unnamed cult group, Dr. Scalinger (F. Murray Abraham). Nostradamus took a secret oath to study banned books and learn more about astrology, the occult, and herbal treatments. He ... met his wife Marie (Ormond), who was a student of Scalinger's but was not allowed access to the secret books.

Word of Nostradamus's healing powers made him a celebrated figure in Provence. He wrote a book listing the doctors and pharmacists he had met in southern Europe, translated anatomical texts, developed recipes for gourmet foods, and received his doctorate in 1529 from Montpellier. He ... taught at the university for three years, but left when his radical ideas about disease were censured. He chose a wife from among the many offered to him by wealthy and connected families, and settled in the town of Agen. Unfortunately, Le Charbon's recurrence felled his wife and two young children; because the famed physician could not save his own family, citizens suddenly looked upon him with scorn. His in-laws sued for the return of the dowry given to him.

Lemesurier's book is a significant effort to reveal the written sources underlying the prophecies of Nostradamus. He especially manages to show convincingly how Nostradamus drew on contemporary publications for implicit references in his abundant use of omens. In this way Lemesurier reveals where Nostradamus really took his "inspiration" for many of his prophetic verses. This book represents one more substantial step in the critical evaluation of the work of the famous Renaissance prophet.
