Keep taking Norvasc if you’re being treated for high blood pressure, even if you are feeling well. Hypertension often has no symptoms. It may take up to a week to get the full benefits from Norvasc when you are taking it for high blood pressure.

Norvasc works by decreasing the workload of the muscle in the heart and the muscle in the lining of the blood vessels. The result is that blood vessels open easier, which lowers blood pressure and allows better flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart.

You can take Norvasc safely with or without food. It can ... be taken with grapefruit juice. (Grapefruit juice can affect the way your body breaks down many medicines.) It's also okay to take Norvasc with drugs you buy off the shelf, like Advil ® or Maalox ®, and other high blood pressure medicines.

SILDENAFIL: A single 100 mg dose of sildenafil (Viagra®) in subjects with essential hypertension had no effect on the pharmacokinetic parameters of Norvasc. When Norvasc and sildenafil were used in combination, each agent independently exerted its own blood pressure lowering effect.
