Norton is a city in Wise County in the Heart of Appalachia region of Virginia. It has numerous parks, including the Flag Park Recreation Area. From the City of Norton, Flag Rock can be seen as a rock outcrop capped with an American Flag... the name "Flag Rock". The recreation site sits over 1,000 feet above the City's elevation of 2,350 ft.

Norton... known as Cynthiana, is the oldest native North American varietal in commercial cultivation today. The cultivar belongs to the aestivalis species of vine, which by American wine standards is ancient. As early as 1770 renowned Philadelphian botanist John Bartram made note in his horticultural journals of a native vine type that was popular amongst mid-Atlantic colonist who domesticated it for its usefulness in winemaking – the cited vine type is now reasonably believed to be Vitis aestivalis, and is quite likely the antecedent to the variety we know today as Norton.

Norton, an adjunct professor of radiology at a Massachusetts community college, who is classified as an "independent contractor," does not have insurance from his state employer. He makes about $40,000 a year, too much to qualify for an exemption from the state's requirement that individuals buy private insurance policies. But he can't afford the high combined premiums and deductibles of the policies that state is calling "affordable." He will discuss the unaffordability of such private insurance, in Massachusetts or under the proposed California health insurance legislation, for middle-class workers.

Mr. Norton graduated from Columbia University's School of Architecture in 1947. He soon earned a coveted position as Director of Design for the firm of Sherwood Mills & Smith in Stamford, CT. He later co-founded the successful Norton and Hume Architects. From 1973 to 1978 he was Director of Architecture at Rockefeller Center in NYC. In 1978 he entered into private practice. Mr. Norton retired from Architectural Design in 2004.

Norton's population remained small until after 1900. In 1920 it increased to 2,935. By 1940, it had risen to 4,204. By 1950, the population had grown to 7,454. In 1980, the population peaked at over 12,000, but dropped slightly in 1990 to 11,452. The 2000 census estimated the population at 11,523.
