Northwest Angle

Forgotten by time, the Northwest Angle has always been a getaway to Lake of the Woods. The Voyageurs passed through in the 1700's. Today the Northwest Angle is still your getaway to Lake of the Woods.

The Northwest Angle appeared on the nation's radar last spring when a group of residents announced their desire to secede from the U.S. and join Manitoba. The reason was a complicated dispute involving the U.S., Canada, Ontario, Minnesota, and international treaties. Angle residents say Canada has passed burdensome border-crossing rules while Ontario, fearing overfishing, has passed discriminatory fishing regulations. Angle residents have ... become angry over inaction by the U.S. They say regulation of international border waters can't apply to just certain groups on that water. Resort owner Gary Dietzler, who also runs a restaurant called Grumpy's, says Ontario is trying to drive them out of business, and visitors to his resort are being penalized.

The Northwest Angle and Islands are located at the Top of the Nation. Check out a U.S. map and then the state of Minnesota and you will find the chimney, and Lake of the Woods. Surrounded by Canada (Manitoba and Ontario), the Northwest Angle and Islands is the northernmost point in the contiguous United States. This unique part of the country can be reached by motoring along a winding nature filled road of tamarack, black spruce, white & red pine, cedar, and birch. You can ... fly in by ski or float plane, or ride in the comfort of a passenger boat or bombardier.
