Northwest Airlines: Services
built 816 days ago
In the mid-1980s, Northwest operated the only U.S. flag carrier service to Glasgow, Oslo, and Stockholm, as well as service to Copenhagen. However, this was later withdrawn after several years. From 2000 Northwest operated flights to Milan and Rome, both were later withdrawn (from 2003 to 2005 Rome was served only during the summer season). From 1996 until 2002, Northwest operated nonstop flights from its Detroit hub to Beijing and Shanghai but later these routes were suspended. Northwest currently operates these routes from Detroit with a stop at its Tokyo-Narita hub.

Midwest Air Group Inc., which had been resisting merger overtures by AirTran Holdings Inc., announced that it had accepted a higher bid, of about $450 million, from private equity firm TPG Capital and Northwest Airlines Corp., reported Reuters News Service. The $17-per-share offer, which was raised from $16 per share, “includes a passive investment by number-five U.S. airline Northwest, which partners with regional carrier Midwest,” the report disclosed. AirTran, the tenth largest U.S. carrier, had bid $16.27 per share. It issued a statement saying that it “was walking away from its bid,” said the report, which added that AirTran had sought Midwest because a merger would have created a national low-cost carrier. The sale is expected to conclude during the fourth quarter of the year.

When the Korean War started in 1950, Northwest employed many of its DC-4s to assist the United Nations forces. They ferried men and transported equipment, including bomber engines and surgical supplies, to various points in Japan and Korea. The military utilization of the airline, which lasted for several years, was carried out without any interruption of its regular commercial services.

The domain name northwest-airlines.com was registered and is being used in bad faith. Because of the notoriety of Complainant’s mark, Respondent could not have registered the domain name in good faith. Under the ICANN Policy, Respondent warranted, by registering the domain name northwest-airlines.com, that… "(b) to your knowledge, the registration of the domain name will not infringe upon or otherwise violate the rights of any third party." ICANN Policy ΒΆ 2(b). The selection of a domain name which entirely incorporates the name of the world’s fourth largest airline could not have been done in good faith. See Singapore Airlines Limited v. P & P Servicios de Communicacion, D2000-0643 (WIPO August 29, 2000) (holding that "the domain name singaporeairlines.com is so obviously connected with a well-known airline that its very registration and use by someone with no connection with the airline suggests opportunistic bad faith. Indeed, it is hard to imagine a more blatant exercise in "cybersquatting").

Neal Cohen, Northwest Executive Vice-President, said that the 100,001st supporter was a Missourian man, who added his name to the online petition on Thursday afternoon. "The overwhelming show of support by more than 100,000 US travelers from across the country demonstrates the strong demand and critical need for new nonstop service to Shanghai and Beijing from Northwest's WorldGateway hub at Detroit."
