MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Northwest Airlines (Nasdaq) today announced changes to the distribution cost reduction initiative that it announced on Aug. 24, 2004. The initiative was part of an effort to align the airline's cost of distributing tickets with those of the low-cost carriers it increasingly competes with for today's traveler.
Jan. 10, 2007: Northwest Airlines and Delta are involved in ongoing talks about a possible joint operating plan once the two carriers emerge from bankruptcy. During World War II, Northwest joined the war effort by flying military equipment and personnel from the continental United States to Alaska. During this time, Northwest began painting their aircraft tails red, as a visual aid in the often harsh weather conditions. This experience with the severe northern climate led the government to designate Northwest as the United States' main North Pacific carrier following the war.
Northwest has been playing hardball with its unions. It virtually pushed its union mechanics into a strike, making an offer calling for 25 percent pay cuts and slashing half of the union's jobs at the carrier. It hired 1,200 replacement workers, as well as managers and outside contractors, ready to do the union's work as soon as the strike started.
