The terms Ulster, Northern Ireland, "the six counties," and "the North" are used interchangeably in Ireland for this small, ruggedly beautiful and historically troubled land. The fact that nobody knows quite what to call it is appropriate given the seemingly endless struggle that has gone on for the soul of this place.

The University of Ulster today opened a new Nanotechnology Research Institute at its Jordanstown campus in Northern Ireland. The GBP8m research institute will position Northern Ireland at the forefront of nanotechnology research in the UK, and will be a catalyst for the future growth in the biotechnology, medical devices and textile industrial sectors. The formal opening ceremony was performed by Nobel Laureate Professor Ivar Giaever, who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1973.

In Nov. 2003 legislative elections, the Ulster Unionists and other moderates lost out to Northern Ireland's extremist parties: Ian Paisley's Democratic Unionists and Sinn Fein. Power sharing between these antithetical parties was out of the question.

The six-pointed star represents the six counties of Ulster that make up Northern Ireland. Other Ulster counties are in the Republic. The traditional flag of the province of Ulster is similar to the flag of Northern Ireland, but the field is yellow rather than white, and the red hand is on a white shield rather than a star, no crown.

Unionists often call Northern Ireland "Ulster" or "the Province"; nationalists often use the terms "the North of Ireland" or "the Six Counties". Ulster formed one of the historic provinces of the island of Ireland and consisted of 9 counties. Three of these now form part of the Republic of Ireland.
