The awards are named after former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell who spearheaded the historic Good Friday Agreement of 1998, which produced peace in Northern Ireland. The Mitchell Scholarship program recognizes outstanding young Americans who exhibit the highest standards of academic excellence, leadership and community service. The program seeks to link future American leaders with the island of Ireland.
The SS Nomadic, a ship that is reaching a century in age, was bought by the Northern Ireland government and Belfast City Council to be restored in Belfast, Harland & Wolff's Hamilton docks. A status update up till beginning of November is presented here.

GMC President, Sir Graeme Catto, visited Northern Ireland on Tuesday 5 June to officially open the Queen’s University Belfast Medical School’s new Clinical Skills Education Centre.
