Northern Cyprus is a hidden gem, a country where unspoilt countryside stretches for miles, and the beaches are as clean and empty as nature herself intended. As soon as you land on North Cyprus, you'll feel right at home as the Turkish Cypriots drive on the left! You can enjoy stunning views from your own North Cyprus villa or apartment, or soak up the sun pool-side at a fabulous resort hotel right on the beach. On your Northern Cyprus holiday, you can play golf on a mountain, dive with turtles, explore Roman palaces, or walk in pristine mountain forests. Or, explore medieval walled cities and elegant Venetian harbours, before sitting back and watch the world go by over a Turkish coffee and a well-deserved sticky pasty! Whatever you want to do, a North Cyprus holiday offers so much more, right on your doorstep.
Commercial banks in Northern Cyprus are of two kinds. There are banks which are branches of large organisations based in Turkey, and local banks. Many of these banks have correspondents in other countries. Transactions can be carried out in all leading currencies. The Central Bank of Northern Cyprus is responsible for the monetary, credit and exchange policy, and acts as banker to the government. Banking hours for the public: 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in summer.

Northern Cyprus has a number of impressive castles. One of the most striking is St Hilarion Castle, a few kilometres to the south-west of Kyrenia. It was probably built on the site of a monastery where the remains of the Saint Hilarion were preserved after his death in the late 4th century. The extensive ruins are celebrated above all for their precipitous location and stunning views. Buffavento Castle, south-east of Kyrenia, was a Byzantine fortress. Kantara Castle, a medieval fortress further to the east, has magnificent views over the coast.

The cuisine of Northern Cyprus owes its heritage to a mixture of Mediterranean and oriental influences. Local dishes are good and made from natural fresh produce. The ‘Meze’ is a speciality of Cyprus and consists of a large number of cold and hot hors d’oeuvres such as different salads, meats, vegetables and sea food. It is either taken as an appetiser or as a main course. Other typical dishes of the region are Shish kebab (marinated lamb skewered and grilled over charcoal), Yalanci Dolma (wine leaves stuffed with rice onions and tomatoes. Sheftali kebab (spicy minced lamb wrapped in skin and cooked on charcoal) Musakka (layers of mince, potato aubergines and courgettes baked in the oven with melted cheese topping).
Compared with most countries in Western Europe, the cost of living in Northern Cyprus is low. Locally produced products or those produced in Turkey are generally cheaper than thier European counterparts. However, goods imported from Europe tend to tend to be higher in price than their country of origin. Very cheap are cigarettes and alchohol.
