North and South: North Korea

The North and South Korean leaders ... agreed to expand economic ties. The two countries have fought several naval clashes over a sea border established by the United Nations west of the Korean peninsula. The leaders called for the recognition of a common fishing area in an effort to reduce tensions.

World Food Program officials in North Korea say the vast majority of the population is less well off since the economic changes, especially factory workers, civil servants, retirees and anybody else on a fixed income. But there are those who have gotten rich. Poor Chongjin residents disparage them as donbulrae, or money insects.

[M]any regional security analysts, and South Korean citizens say Seoul's policy of engaging with the North has produced little benefit. They note that North Korea has not improved its human rights record and has built a nuclear arsenal, despite promises not to.
