EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands, October 18/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The city of Caen in Normandy, France will today be the setting for a trial of one of the most promising new technologies in the mobile telecommunications market: Near Field Communication (NFC). With this touch-based technology from Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI), 200 Caen residents will use mobile phones with an embedded Philips NFC chip as a means of secure payment in selected retail stores, parking facilities and famous tourist sites around town in a six-month trial. For the trial, Philips will work closely with France Telecom R&D, network operator Orange, handset manufacturer Samsung and renowned retailers Groupe LaSer and Vinci Park.

Normandy is a major cider-producing region (very little wine is produced). Perry is ... produced, but in less significant quantities. Apple brandy, of which the most famous variety is calvados, is also popular. The mealtime trou normand, or Norman break, is a pause between meal courses in which diners partake of a glassful of calvados, and is still observed in many homes and restaurants. Pommeau is an aperitif produced by blending unfermented cider and apple brandy. Another aperitif is the kir normand, a measure of cassis topped up with cider.

Situated in the extreme west of Surrey, within a short distance of the Hampshire border, the parish of Normandy includes Wyke, Christmaspie, Willey Green, Pinewood and Flexford. In spite of increasing residential development, this district still remains largely rural in character with agriculture and its associated undertakings as the principal local industry. It is the birthplace of brioches (especially those from Évreux and Gisors) and also turns out douillons (pears baked in pastry), craquelins, roulettes in Rouen, fouaces in Caen, fallues in Lisieux, sablés in Lisieux. Confectionery of the region includes Rouen apple sugar, Isigny caramels, Bayeux mint chews, Falaise berlingots, Le Havre marzipans, Argentan croquettes, and Rouen macaroons.

The prosperity of Normandy in Roman times is proved by the number and importance of the towns which existed there at that time. The most important was Lillebonne (Juliobona), chief town of the Caletes, the Roman antiquities of which are famous. The evangelization of Normandy did not take place before the 3rd century: the first bishop of Rouen, about 260, seems to have been St Mallonus; it is possible... that before this date there were a few Christian communities in Normandy, as seems to be proved by the existence of St Nicasius, who was martyred in the Vexin.
