His presentation, "Non-Violent Resistance: A Treatment for Helpless Parents of Aggressive Children," is part of the University Colloquium Series. Weinblatt will talk about the basic principles and strategies on which the program is based and the different interventions used to resist the aggressive acts of a child. Through discussion of a clinical study (Omar 2004) in which the program was evaluated, participants in the colloquium will get a better understanding of the program and what it aims to accomplish.

The tactics of non-violent resistance seek primarily to create situations that crystallize public opinion - that "involve" it - and which "direct" it against the government, while at the same time legitimatizing its own position. This legitimatization is accomplished when the resister willingly suffers ; it demonstrates his integrity, courage, honesty, while showing the injustice, cruelty, or tyranny of the government. The essential function of suffering is comparable to the interaction that takes place between a martyr and a crowd. The resister's token of power in the face of the opponent's violence is his capacity to "suffer" in the eyes of the on-looking audience.

Historically non-violent resistance involves the use of a range of forceful sanctions - such as strikes, boycotts, civil disobedience, disrupting the functions of government, even non-violent sabotage. This can all be incorporated within a strategy for undermining an oppressor's pillars of support, resourced and supported by the West.

Popular struggle, like violent resistance, is not an end in and of itself; it is a method, a strategy. It is the end goal, decolonization and liberation from occupation and Zionist apartheid.
Human beings have two great weapons of non-violent resistance -- speech and art. And when one is forbidden, the other breaks out, sometimes in the most unexpected fashion.Over the past 20 years, many rug makers from Afghanistan, virtually all of them women, have been waging a subtle but powerful political protest movement by incorporating the images of war into their weavings.
Non-violent resistance is the weapon of the non-elite, those practised in surviving with dignity in hard times. It is a statement that one is not willing to accept either harm to one's self or harm to others---very revolutionary demands. And it does carry an underlying demand for public witness of this ideal---think back to the person leaving the last of his clothes in a courtroom in rejection of an economic system that impoverished him.
