Ethical Corporation says over the past ten years Noel Purcell has worked behind the scenes to implement a huge turnaround in the bank's corporate social responsibility. He was the first in the bank to make significant ethics-related internal changes by working directly with the chief executive. He has been the person with ultimate responsibility after the chief executive for implementation.

A month or so ago RTE (Ireland's national television station) broadcast a special programme on Noel Purcell's life. It included some very poignant material, particularly one of his last public performances - he led the crowd in a rendition of "Dublin Can Be Heaven." which was very much his signature tune in his own city.

On forty one minutes Waterford should have doubled their lead, Colin O’Shea slipped the ball into Kenny Purcell his shot was turned around the post by Mike Fitzpatrick. Those misses almost came back to haunt Waterford two minutes to half time. John Kerin pulled a ball back from the end line and the ball fell into the path of Kieran Hackett but he swept the chance over the crossbar. The Waterford management team were not happy at half time as Waterford had missed a hatful of chances. So the players came out with the managers words ringing in their ears and straight from the kick off they set about finishing off Clare. Gavin Faulkner set up Kenny Purcell in the first minute of the second half and only a fine save from Fitzpatrick stopped Purcell from scoring.

Noel Mary Purcell is the only Irish international rugby player to win an Olympic gold medal, which he did as a member of the British waterpolo team in Antwerp in 1920. In those days, before the emergence of the Irish Free State in 1922, Irish based sportsmen qualified to represent Britain only. Purcell later represented Ireland in the 1924 Olympics on the Irish waterpolo team (without much success). Purcell played in all Irelands rugby internationals in 1921 and six years later he became a noted rugby referee and had charge of the Scotland v England match at Edinburgh in 1927.
