The Nobel Peace Prize offers the opportunity to lift the light of the sacred fire, manifested in personhood and actions, out from under the bushel and to place it on a pedestal where it can shine forth to inspire others. The Nobel Peace Prize is one of six awards in the memory of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of Dynamite. Every year the organization gives out six awards for the people "who best benefit mankind through their actions" in one of the six subjects (which include peace, literature, physics, chemistry, economics, and medicine).

Richardson has touted his past Nobel Peace Prize nominations in at least two campaign commercials, but the Nobel Committee won't verify that since names of nominees are kept secret until 50 years later. Gordon spokeswoman Julie Eubank said her boss was involved in nominations in 2000 and 2001.

President Gorbachev, architect of perestroika and a prime mover in the détente that ended the Cold War, acknowledged the extent of IPPNW's influence in his memoir, Perestroika. "It is impossible to ignore what these people are saying. What they are doing commands great respect.
