Nobel Prize: Al Gore
built 628 days ago
Being born in Australia is perhaps not enough in itself to make a winner an Australian Nobel laureate. For example, laser pioneer Aleksandr Prokhorov (Physics, 1964) was born in Queensland , but he left Australia as a seven-year-old and never returned. But the fact that someone was not born here can be quite irrelevant. Patrick White (Literature, 1973) was not born in Australia , he was not educated here, and he said that he did not feel particularly Australian - yet he won the prize 'for an epic and psychological narrative art which has introduced a new continent [ Australia ] into literature'.

"Our analysis shows that Al Gore's cultural legacy is enormously enhanced by the Nobel Prize," stated IFC General Manager and Executive Vice President Evan Shapiro. "The Nobel was seen as more significant than Mr. Gore's other recent honors, and more meaningful than the one honor that eluded him -- the Presidency. Most of all, as the survey indicates, Friday's Nobel announcement has created a valuable moment in time for independent minded votes within the electorate.

Mr. Gore “is probably the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted,” the Nobel citation said. The United Nations committee, a network of 2,000 scientists, has produced two decades of scientific reports that have “created an ever-broader informed consensus about the connection between human activities and global warming,” the citation said.
