Nobel Peace Prize

Elie Wiesel, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and Boston University professor, is the evening's main speaker. Wiesel has worked on behalf of oppressed people for much of his adult life. His personal experience of the Holocaust has led him to use his talents as author, teacher and storyteller to defend human rights and peace throughout the world. His 1958 novel, "LaNuit" (Night), about his Holocaust experience, has been translated into 25 languages and millions of copies have been sold.

Al Gore's well-earned Nobel Peace Prize is an inspiration on many levels. From his cliff-hanger loss for presidency, he rebounded with new purpose as an environmental crusader. His wonkish manner was pitch-perfect for outlining the peril of global warming.

[M]any of the people on the list of past Nobel Peace Prize recipients are, to put it mildly, suspect. The list of suspects starts early. Theodore Roosevelt won the award in 1906 for helping end the Russo-Japanese War. Woodrow Wilson won the award in 1919 for promoting the League of Nations. Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho won the award in 1973 for the Vietnam Peace Accord, although Le Duc Tho refused the award on the grounds that there was no peace in Vietnam. Menachem Begin and Anwar al-Sadat won the award in 1978 for negotiating peace between Egypt and Israel.

Rush Limbaugh winning the Nobel Peace Prize and being called an “advocate for freedom and democracy?” Only on the Bizarro World. While Limbaugh might actually win the Nobel Peace Prize on the Bizarro World, his chances here on earth are poor compared to those of Al Gore, who is seen as a possible winner. The nomination by itself means little. Last year there were 190 nominees for the award, and probably none who deserved it less than Rush Limbaugh.
The Nobel Peace Prize was first presented in 1901 by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. This committee is elected by the Norwegian Storting (parliament). By the Statutes of the Nobel Foundation, the prize-awarding bodies shall present to each prize-winner the monetary amount of the prize, a diploma, and a gold medal with the appropriate inscription. In 1996, the value of the prize was about $1,100,000. Anywhere from one to three people may be nominated in writing for and awarded the Peace Prize because of related or joint works. These new Nobel laureates receive their awards during a ceremony on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian not the Swedish Nobel Prize Committee. In his mention of Churchill, Bissoondoyal manages an intellectual sleight-of-hand. Churchill was indeed awarded a Nobel Prize; ... it was a prize for literature not for peace46 - and literary talents need have no connection with beliefs in "peaceful methods". Martin Luther King was awarded the Peace Prize in 1964; he was assassinated in 1968.
