Nobel Peace Prize: Nobel Prizes
built 656 days ago
Bangladesh's first Nobel Prize exhilarated a poor nation more accustomed to news of natural disasters, disease and political upheaval. A massive public assembly was planned for Saturday in Dhaka to honor Yunus and the Grameen Bank, according to bank officials who said their offices were besieged Friday by customers, citizens and politicians offering congratulations.

As an adult Nobel began his professional life as a chemist in Sweden. He spent his entire life experimenting in many chemical fields, but his most notable accomplishments were made with synthetic materials. Nobel developed and patented a new synthetic type of explosive nitroglycerine, which he named "dynamite," and later began manufacturing. He continued his development and research, and eventually helped replace his original form of dynamite with safer, more stable gelatin dynamite, which was better for handling. His other chemical research provided valuable information on the preparation of artificial forms of rubber, leather, silk, and precious stones. In the end Nobel accumulated just over 350 patents on a variety of ideas and substances, while some of his ideas proved more imaginative than useful, there were some that became both extremely practicable and valuable.

[T]he fact that Bilirakis is not qualified to nominate Nobel Prize winners did not stop Scarborough or Hannity from referring to Hammesfahr as a Nobel Prize nominee. Hannity did so a total of eight times during a single hour-long program; Scarborough made the reference four times. Additionally, Scarborough erroneously claimed that Hammesfahr has "treated" Schiavo; in fact, Hammesfahr has merely examined her as one of five doctors approved by a Florida court in 2001 to do so. He was one of two doctors selected by Schiavo's parents; two others were selected by Schiavo's husband, Michael Schiavo, and the fifth was chosen by the court.

At first glance, it seems odd that the inventor of a powerful explosive would endow a group of awards that includes a peace prize. But Nobel was an industrialist with a conscience. He is credited with creating a controllable combustible that made blasting rock and the construction of canals and tunnels a relatively safe process. Nobel ... contributed to the inventions of synthetic rubber, artificial silk, and synthetic leather. He held more than 350 patents. His interests were not limited to science.

Rotblat received the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to diminish the role of nuclear arms in international politics. One of the scientists involved in the development of the atomic bomb, Rotblat claims he left the Manhattan Project six months before the first atomic weapons test because intelligence reports showed that Hitler had no practical hope of marshaling the same technology. In recent years, Rotblat has called for the elimination of nuclear arms.
