Niue: Visit Niue
built 657 days ago
Sunday in Niue is a day of rest and worship and visitors are asked to respect this. Sunday protocol prevents such activities as fishing and boating, although it is permissible to play golf, go sightseeing or swimming. Niue, now governed independently, was once annexed to New Zealand and Niue's citizens still hold dual citizenship.

Samoans and Tongans are thought to have been Niue's first inhabitants. The island was visited by Captain James Cook in 1774; he named it 'Savage Island' after the warlike reputation of the people. The London Missionary Society began administering the island in 1846. It became a British protectorate in 1900, and the following year it was annexed to New Zealand as a dependency. Emigration began with the recruitment of Niueans to work in the phosphate mines of the region.
Many people come to Niue to encounter the humpback whales which visit the island every winter (July - October) to breed. The waters around Niue have been declared a whale sanctuary where all cetaceans are protected. These massive marine mammals often pass within metres of the shore putting on an impressive show from the island's many vantage points. For keen snorkellers, its possible to get within metres of the mothers and calves as they rest in the shallows. Niue is one of the few places in the world where there are no restrictions on interactions with the whales. Pods of spinner dolphins ... inhabit the waters around Niue offering the opportunity to swim with these completely wild creatures.

These writings are reflections and experiences of those living on Niue today. The subjects are many and varied. The birth of the group in December 1995 furnished the passion of perspective writers to bring forth a means of self-expression. The timing was right as the following year, 1996, several specialists in this area from the region visited the island, namely Peggy Fairbairn-Dunlop from Samoa and Linda Crowl from the Institute of Pacific Studies, University of the South Pacific, Suva. The members of Tohitohi Nukutuluea are most grateful for their valuable advice and encouragement, which gave assurance and enlightenment to the group.
Humpback Whales visit Niue from June to October and are frequently sighted from Matavai & Namukulu. As well, a resident school of Spinner Dolphins can be sighted all year around. You can book trips to watch or snorkel with the dolphins and whales. This is an amazing experience and is highly recommended as a "must-do" between June and October.
Marine activities are undoubtedly one of the highlights of a visit to Niue. Diving in particular is a unique and exciting experience on Niue. As a dive destination, Niue sits atop an undersea mountain with pristine clear water hundreds of meters deep just a stone's throw from the shore.
