The reaction was set off when workers mixed too much uranium with nitric acid in a tank, officials from JCO said. The officials said 16 kg (35 lbs) instead of 2.4 kg (5 lbs) were used.

The nitric acid plant is the latest in a series of Asia growth initiatives that INVISTA has embarked on in the past 12 months. These initiatives include new manufacturing plants for spandex and nylon 6,6 airbag fibers, a new nylon 6,6 intermediates and polymer complex, and acquisition of a nylon carpet fiber plant.

Typically, passivation is performed with a nitric acid bath from 20 to 50% by volume. Temperatures range from ambient to 160 degrees F. Immersion times can be as long as two hours and even include the addition of a chromate salt. Nitric acid is by far the most accepted means by which passivation is performed.

In medicine, nitric acid is used externally in a pure state as a caustic to destroy chancres, warts and phagadenic ulcers; and diluted preparations are employed in the treatment of dyspepsia, &c. Poisoning by strong nitric acid produces a widespread gastroenteritis, burning pain in the oesophagus and abdomen and bloody diarrhoea. There may ... be blood in the urine. Death occurs from collapse or from secondary destructive changes in the intestinal canal. Characteristic yellow staining of the skin round the mouth from the formation of xanthoproteic acid serves to distinguish it from poisoning by other acids. The antidotes are mild alkalis, together with the use of opium to relieve pain.
The manufacture of nitric acid is very often combined with that of suIphuric, especially in those factories where the former is employed in making the vitriol. Large quantities... are produced for general manufacturing purposes.

This equation predicts an increase in the reduction potential (increase in oxidizing ability) as the acidity and molarity of nitric acid increases. Please keep in mind that this assumes a reaction that is not kinetically limited (irreversible).
