Nitric Acid: Concentration
built 654 days ago
Nitric acid spills are serious and care should be taken to follow all chemical spill clean up procedures carefully. Small or dilute concentrations (10 ml of >50% or 100 ml of dilute) can be cleaned up using a spill kit. The entire spill kit containing the clean up materials can then be labeled and placed in a satellite accumulation area for pickup and disposal. If large amounts of acid are spilled, or if the spill is beyond your ability and training to clean up, evacuate the laboratory and contact the Tufts Police from a safe location.
Corrosion information hub: The Corrosion Doctor's Web site Concentrated nitric acid and its vapors are highly corrosive to the eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. Dilute solutions cause mild skin irritation and hardening of the epidermis. Contact with concentrated nitric acid stains the skin yellow and produces deep painful burns. Eye contact can cause severe burns and permanent damage. Inhalation of high concentrations can lead to severe respiratory irritation and delayed effects, including pulmonary edema, which may be fatal. Ingestion of nitric acid may result in burning and corrosion of the mouth, throat, and stomach.
Concentrated nitric acid is extremely hazardous; it is corrosive, reactive, an oxidizer, and a poison. The following hazards are for concentrated solutions. Hazards of less concentrated solutions may be reduced. Degree of hazard for reduced concentrations is not currently addressed in the available literature.
In a low concentration (approximately 10%), nitric acid is often used to artificially age pine and maple. The color produced is a grey-gold very much like very old wax or oil finished wood (wood finishing). [3]
Close scheduling is recommended for the road transport of nitric acid with a concentration above 99% to ensure that the transport time from loading (pressurising) to unloading (depressurising) is no longer than 3 days. Further safety precautions must be taken if this cannot be guaranteed.
