Nissan Xterra
built 140 days ago
Unlike most SUVs, the 2008 Nissan Xterra is built on a heavy-duty truck frame made for wonderfully unforgiving conditions. Four-wheel drive and the newly available Dynamic Control Package team up to keep you pushing ahead, over seemingly insurmountable terrain. Depending on which model you choose, your power source will be one of three gutsy engines: A SuperCharged V6 for mountain-climbing boost, a regular V6 with up to 180 horsepower, or a torquey 143-horsepower 4-cylinder. Under the truck, auto-locking hubs let you shift into 4-wheel drive instantly - you don't even have to get out and brave the elements. You can shift on the fly up to 25 miles per hour, then once you're in four-wheel drive, you can pick up the speed. This is a feature every expert mentions in his or her 2008 Nissan Xterra review.

The latest Nissan Xterra is powered by a 4.0-liter, 265-horsepower V6 driving through a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual. There are four trim levels: X, S, SE and Off-Road. The first three are offered in both rear- and four-wheel-drive versions, while the Off-Road is offered in 4WD only. The entry-level X is minimally equipped, while the S adds items like cruise control, remote keyless entry and full power accessories. The SE piles on more premium touches while the Off-Road model loses the luxe touches in favor of extra equipment that improves off-road performance.

Inside, the 2003 Nissan Xterra proves roomier than most SUVs. It features power steering, a tachometer, air conditioning, and a split folding rear seat. The XE V6, SE, and SE S/C ... offer a height-adjustable driver seat and a tilt steering wheel. On the SE and the SE S/C, the steering wheel is leather-wrapped, and equipped with radio controls. A Rockford/Fosgate AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD changer is also a standard feature of these two models. Both these upper models offer the Rugged Leather package, which features leather upholstery, and suede accents.

Under the 2005 Nissan Xterra's hood is a 4.0-liter V6 engine, mated to a choice of a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission driving the rear or all four wheels. Rated by Nissan to generate 250-plus horsepower and 270-plus lb.-ft. of torque, the new engine is an increased displacement version of Nissan's 3.5-liter VQ engine found in the 350Z, Maxima and Altima. The redesigned 2005 Nissan Frontier and 2005 Nissan Pathfinder ... use this 4.0-liter V6.

The Nissan Xterra was launched as a small sports utility vehicle that was built on the Nissan F-Alpha body in 2000. The vehicle was available with either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The Xterra was available in three models; the entry level, the XE V6 and the SE. The entry-level models had a four-cylinder engine, a manual transmission, and two-wheel drive. The XE V6 and SE models had a 3.3-Liter V6 engine and either a manual or an automatic transmission. The XE and SE models were available with either two-wheel or four-wheel drive. All models came equipped with anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, and skid plates for the engine/transmission.

In 2005 the Nissan Xterra was significantly reworked for the first time -- not sharing a single part with its predecessor yet looking vaguely familiar. The second-generation vehicle's overall length was unchanged, but the wheelbase was stretched by 2 inches. This not only resulted in a sleeker and more integrated look, but ... improved ramp angles for increased off-road clearance. The Nissan Xterra now climbed more like a mad mountain goat thanks also to an all-new chassis and a powerful new 4.0-liter V6 producing 265 hp. For 2006, the big news was a new entry-level X trim level for the more budget-conscious.
