Nirvana (Band)
built 192 days ago
Nirvana under new management company, Gold Mountain, started to search for a major label to call home. The David Geffen Company (DGC) seemed to suit the band’s needs fine with its reps molded in the artist friendly style from the indies. Their roster included respectable punksters, Sonic Youth (with whom Nirvana would later tour).

The nature of Nirvana assumes a differently aspected Mahayana focus in what alleges to be the final of all Mahayana sutras, allegedly delivered by the Buddha on his last day of life on earth - the Mahaparinirvana Sutra or Nirvana Sutra. Here, as well as in a number of linked "tathagatagarbha" sutras, in which the Tathagatagarbha is equated with the Buddha's eternal Self or eternal nature, Nirvana is spoken of by the Mahayana Buddha in very "cataphatic", positive terms. Nirvana, or "Great Nirvāna", is indicated to be the sphere or domain (vishaya) of the True Self. It is seen as the state which constitutes the attainment of what is "Eternal, the Self, Bliss, and the Pure". Mahā-nirvāna ("Great Nirvana") ... becomes equivalent to the ineffable, unshakeable, blissful, all-pervading and deathless Selfhood of the Buddha himself - a mystery which no words can adequately reach and which, according to the Nirvana Sutra, can only be fully known by an Awakened Being - a perfect Buddha - directly.

There were so many bands that made it after the door was kicked in that you can't help but say that it was a matter of timing for Nirvana. It could have been Pearl Jam, who released Ten that year. It could have been Soundgarden, who released Badmotorfinger. There is an outside chance that it could have bee The Smashing Pumpkins who released Gish. Trent Reznor was ... in the mix with releases in 1989 (Pretty Hate Machine,) 1992 (Broken EP,) and 1994 (The Downward Spiral.)

The band first called Phuria (Fury) was influenced by Nirvana and the grunge scene, becoming a popular Cover Nirvana band in the city. With the years going by, the trio worked a lot to buy instruments, and to find a bass player. With no money for studios the band had to rehearse in the backyards, basement and old buildings, always being challenged with interruptions, reprehensions.

Soundgarden is one of the bands that tends to come immediately to mind when the word "Grunge" is invoked, along with Nirvana and Pearl Jam. They disbanded in 1997, though their prescence is still felt and many of the band members are still in bands, including frontman Chris Cornell who's found great success (again) in the Rage Against The Machine splinter group Audioslave.
