Nintendogs is a pet simulation video game, similar to a virtual pet, for the Nintendo DS portable game system. The player is given the ability to interact with virtual puppies via the DS's touchscreen and microphone. It began as a project for the GameCube, but was later scrapped and re-worked for the dual-screen portable. The game made its debut at the 2004 Electronic Entertainment Expo as a tech demo for the system. At one time, the North American version was to be titled Puppy Times, but this was changed back to Nintendogs before the game's release.

Even though owning a real dog requires a LOT more responsibility (the game makes that clear, too), Nintendogs might be a good teaching tool for kids. If you're not sure if your child is ready to take care of a real pet, try out a Nintendog first. Or maybe your kids want a real dog, but the apartment or house you live in is too small to accommodate a new furry member of the family. Or maybe your child wants a dog, but they're allergic. Nintendogs might be a great game for that. Just don't forget to pay attention to your real pets!

Nintendogs easily has some of the most replay value of any game out there ever. It's virtually a never ending game simply because it's a pet simulator that allows you to take care of your own dog! Your dog will not die, and whether or not it will actually grow and mature seem to be unseen. But regardless of that, there's always something that you can do with your puppy, it's just like you would be interacting with one in real life! A real dog is an animal you can interact with on a daily basis and it's no different in this case. The fun is always there, the competitions are fierce and you can always erase what tricks your dog(s) may know and teach them new ones that are more complex!

In addition to Nintendogs, Nintendo DS has a strong lineup of games arriving before the end of the year. These include Advance Wars: Dual Strike on Aug. 22, Trace Memory on Sept. 26, Metroid Prime Pinball on Oct. 24 and Mario & Luigi 2 in Q4. The new price for Nintendo DS ... gives consumers another excuse to buy a Nintendo DS to be ready for the upcoming Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the wireless gaming service to launch later this year with a Mario Kart racing game and an Animal Crossing community-building game.

Originally, three different versions of Nintendogs existed. In Japan, their subtitles were Chihuahua & Friends, Dachshund & Friends and Shiba & Friends. In North America, Singapore and Europe, the game's subtitles are maintained, but Shiba & Friends was changed to Lab & Friends, a more recognizable breed in those countries, though the Shiba Inu is still present in the game. Another version of Nintendogs, titled Nintendogs: Best Friends, has been bundled with teal and pink (in the U.S., the pink version was only available at Target and Toys "R" Us) Nintendo DS models. Nintendogs: Best Friends was released in Singapore on 15 July 2006 after new location of GameScore at Funan opened. Europe had slightly different bundles: a pink DS bundle with the Dachshund version of the game, and a blue DS bundle with the Lab version.

Nintendogs lets you pick a puppy from a variety of breeds available at the beginning of the game. As you start spending time with your pup you can throw flying discs and balls to improve the pup's agility. You can bathe it when it gets dirty and use your own personal voice commands to train the dog to do tricks. If you train it well enough, your dog will excel in obedience and agility trials and disc competitions, which will earn money that you can use to buy other supplies and puppy breeds. When you earn enough cash, you can buy even more puppies to live with their original pup. Players can socialize their pups by walking them around the town, where they will meet neighborhood dogs, and maybe even find new toys.
