1. Simone Signoret -- Nina Simone
   Nina Simone was a classically trained pianist who became a famous nightclub singer, thanks to an early hit, 1958's "I Loves You Porgy." She famously interpreted and composed classical, jazz, pop, gospel, folk and blues songs of love and bitterness and had a worldwide following over a fifty-year career that earned her the nickname of "High Priestess of Soul." A poor black girl from the American south, she was enough of a musical prodigy that community patrons financially supported her musical education. She went to the Julliard School of Music in New York and earned a living as a pianist, accompanying singers and playing in nightclubs. She began singing in 1954, and audiences loved her deep voice, raw emotions and soulful interpretations of standards. Simone was a self-described diva of the temperamental genius variety, and she so detested racial injustice in the United States she lived abroad after 1974 (in Barbados, Africa, Switzerland and, finally, France).

4. Miriam Makeba -- Evening
   From January 17 to February 28, 1966, Miriam Makeba performed for the first time in Sweden at the Bern's Salonger in Stockholm. The performance and interview on this DVD, originally broadcast on Swedish TV and saved for posterity by a long-time fan catches her at the absolute peak of her powers.
5. Norah Jones -- New York City
   Born March 30, 1979, in New York City, but raised in a suburb of Dallas, Texas after relocating south with her mother Sue, Norah Jones showed a strong aptitude for music since childhood. She enrolled in Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts to hone her musical talents but after exposure to several instruments, she realized she wanted to play the piano.
6. Jena Malone -- Debbie Malone
   By September 1999, Jena was in Toronto, filming the HBO movie Cheaters with Jeff Daniels. It was the first time she was on her own (with the emancipation signed but not finalized, the studio allowed a crew member to be named titular guardian), the first time she was playing a naughty girl instead of a wan victim. After several months away from her family... Jena decided it was time for a visit. "I hadn't seen my sister in a really long time, so I said, 'I would love to fly you guys out here, to spend a weekend with me,'" Jena says she told Debbie. "So, she comes out, I think everything's fine, everything's great, she leaves that Monday, and the next week I get a call from Lesley, saying that 'Your mom has gone crazy. She said when she was up there she read your diary.'" Debbie asserts that she "accidentally tripped on her diary."
7. Lauryn Hill
   Lauryn Hill is an American hip hop singer, initially establishing her reputation as the most visible and vocal member of The Fugees. She was born in South Orange, New Jersey and began singing and acting at a very young age. Her acting roles included the TV show As the World Turns (as Kira Johnson in 1991), and the film Sister Act II: Back in the Habit, the latter of which showcased her vocal abilities. Though the Fugees had originally formed in 1988, Hill's membership was disrupted by her acting and her education at Columbia University. The Fugees' first album, Blunted on Reality, was much-hyped but fell far short of expectations. This was followed by The Score, a multi-platinum selling album that established all three Fugees (Hill, Pras Michel and Wyclef Jean) as international successes.
8. Linda Smith -- Sheffield University
   Linda was a model for Maine girls and women in her devotion to the public interest, skill in navigating public policy, and sheer scope of intellectual sparkle. Linda's pioneering work has been recognized by a wide variety of Maine organizations. In March 2001, Linda was inducted into the Maine Women's Hall of Fame and she received the Sarah Orne Jewett award (posthumously) from the Maine Women's Fund in October, shortly after her untimely death as a result of cancer. Linda graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 1980 and served as president of the Maine State Bar Association in 1998.
9. French Cuisine
