The Nikon D70 is a SLR digital camera with a sleek and stylish design. The body of D70 is made using polycarbonate, which makes the camera easy to grip. This camera is equipped with a 6.1 megapixel CCD image sensor, which allows the user to capture high quality pictures at a maximum resolution of up to 3008 x 2000 pixels. The integrated Large Scale Circuit provides sharp, bright pictures with correct white balance, and reduced noise levels. In addition, the 3D metering results in smooth color gradations. The D70 offers a number of exposure modes including Auto, Program AE, Aperture priority AE as well as Manual.
The Nikon D70, which is a 6.1 MP DSLR introduced at PMA in 2004, was Nikon’s first consumer-friendly camera. At an initial price point of $1299, it was aimed to directly compete with Canon’s $999 Digital Rebel (aka 300D). Even with the consumer-level price tag, the camera could hold its own at the time against stiffer, pro-level gear - including Nikon’s own D100.
Built from ground up as a digital SLR, the Nikon D70 offers tremendous value to consumers by incorporating many advanced features and new innovations that make photography with the D70 faster, easier and better. Its DX format 6.1-effective megapixel CCD sensor is optimized to deliver images with excellent sharpness and clarity, while a new advanced system Large Scale Integrated Circuit (LSI) processor ensures images with vivid color, accurate white balance and minimized noise. Nikon’s new Dynamic Buffer technology allows the D70 to continuously take up to 144 pictures at a speed of three pictures per second (when using JPEG NORMAL – Large image settings, and a SanDisk® 256 MB Ultra II CompactFlash™ card). Additional features such as exclusive new Digital Vari-Program™ modes, simultaneous compressed NEF (RAW) and JPEG writing capabilities, and new i-TTL flash compatibility with sync speed of 1/500 second further cement the D70’s place as a clear leader in its class of cameras.
Nikon D70-4 2 The Nikon D70 is probably one of the best and most important cameras Nikon has ever made, period. It's ... its best selling digital SLR to date. While it has some shortcomings, particularly in the high-ISO noise dept. compared to similar offerings from Canon, it delivers an unparalled amount of value for the money. This is a camera that both beginners and advanced photographers can use and it is a great camera for someone new to digital photography. It's a great learning tool as well because it can grow with you as your skills grow, never really holding you back for lack of features or capabilities. I know because this was my first digital SLR and it taught me enough about digital photography and made me enough money to embark on a successful career as a digital photographer as it has for many other people around the world.

Relative to the competition, the Nikon D70 is quite robust, very fast and with image quality only slightly below average in terms of noise and moir‚ artifacts. For better image quality, keeping a solid build and fast continuous shooting, the Konica-Minolta Maxxum 5D is worth a look. Even better image quality, but compromising on build quality, can be obtained with the Canon Digital Rebel XT. Note that differences are minor, anyone wishing to reuse a collection of Nikon lens, shouldn't feel trapped with this camera.

The Nikon D70 is equipped with an F lens mount, allowing it to accept the entire lineup of AF and AF-S Nikon lenses. AF stands for "auto focus," meaning that these lenses are equipped with the necessary sensors to adjust automatically. Nevertheless, on the Nikon D70, this is optional, and users are able to keep the camera in manual focus... retaining total creative control when needed.
