Nike: Factories
built 216 days ago
Tim Connor of NikeWatch said: "On finishing work in a Nike contract factory, the great majority of Nike workers will go back to rural areas marked by extreme poverty. Their future economic security is very much tied up with what they earn now, in that if they are able to save enough they will be able to start small informal businesses back home.
The commercial, directed by Marcus Nispel, who has directed TV ads for the likes of Coca-Cola, Mercedes, Nike and Pepsi, opens in a futuristic factory setting where people are being transported down a conveyer belt toward a molding machine. As they pass through the molding machine, they are stripped of their individuality and unique traits and molded into apparently flawless - and seemingly mindless - beings.

Jeff Ballinger describes Global Alliance as a PR firm for Nike that ""Public Relations firm responsible for this has ... done work for NikeTown, (Michael) Jordan brand, Disney, Hasbro..." (email September 16, 2000). The approach is to conduct focus groups and surveys with workers and managers. The results of the work produce positive reports about working conditions in Nike factories. http://www.theglobalalliance.com/content/about.cfm Global Alliance is part of Nike's "Transparency 101" program.
Exclusive photographs, the first independent pictures taken inside a Nike factory in Vietnam, will be available on the Corporate Watch Web Site after November 10th. This report and the entire Ernst & Young Audit will ... be available.

According to Thuyen Nguyen -- Vietnam Labor Watch, "Basically, [Global Alliance] provides the empirical research for Nike to backup Nike's views of the workers at Nike factories. Quite an expensive venture for some basic research." (email September 16, 2000).
Clearly only well-trained, independent auditors can perform the types of audits that are needed in Nike's factories. As The New York Times admits, a better alternative to accounting firms would be "local, truly independent monitors who speak the language , can make unannounced visits and enjoy the trust of a largely young, female...workforce."21 Labor, religious, or human rights groups that pass an accreditation program would be the best candidates for this job.
