© Africa Focus The second largest city in Niger and the former capital is Zinder, the most important city for the Hausa people of Niger. The Hausa come from North Nigeria and the South East of Niger, but you can come across these trading people all over Africa. It is for good reason that theirs is the most spoken language in Africa. The trading tradition is reflected in the old centre of Zinder, where you can still see the trading people's monumental clay houses with their facades decorated with stucco.
Niger is one of the safest countries in West Africa. The only annoyances you are likely to meet are young boys shouting "Anasara," which means 'foreigner' in most local languaes, derived from the Arabic word. You will ... be asked for a 'cadau' pretty much every time you see a person outside your hotel. The word is French for 'present,' and it is best to remember not to perpetuate the misery this word causes to foreigners working in the country.

The joint visit by Hilary Benn and his French counterpart Xavier Darcos to Niger in February 2005 stemmed from commitments made to strengthen Anglo-French partnership on development made at the summit in November 2004. During the visit, the two ministers signed an undertaking to help Niger accelerate progress towards education and gender MDGs. This represents the first delegated cooperation arrangement in Africa, and DFID funding will be channelled through the French Development Agency to Niger in support of the Government of Niger’s education sector plan.

Niger sent messengers to Rome to announce his acclamation, but those messengers were intercepted by Severus. A deal was struck between Severus and Albinus that kept Albinus in Britain with the title of Caesar. The larger armies of the western provinces were now united in their support for Severus. Niger's support was confined to the east. Severus had Niger's children captured and held as hostages, and a legion was sent to confront Niger's army in Thrace.[[7]]
Map of Niger Niger was incorporated into French West Africa in 1896. There were frequent rebellions, but when order was restored in 1922, the French made the area a colony. In 1958, the voters approved the French constitution and voted to make the territory an autonomous republic within the French Community. The republic adopted a constitution in 1959 but the next year withdrew from the Community, proclaiming its independence.
