By most recent estimates, approximately 2.5 million people in Niger, more than one-fifth of the population, are at risk of starving. This crisis could have been averted. According to the UN, when the first appeal for help was made last November, $1 per day per person would have been enough to assist people who didn't have enough to eat; now, relief agencies will have to spend an average of $80 per day per person to help severely malnourished people. Again, the international community failed to deliver. It was not until July, when images of starving people began to appear in the press, that the international community began to respond.
