In 1913 one of Rutherford's students, Niels Bohr, proposed a model for the hydrogen atom that was consistent with Rutherford's model and yet ... explained the spectrum of the hydrogen atom. The Bohr model was based on the following assumptions.
Niels Bohr develped an explanation of atomic structure that underlies regularities of the periodic table. His model was not completely correct. It is similar to a planetary model becase itsaid that atoms wre built up of successive orbital shells of electrons. His model included the excitation and de-excitation of electrons in specific amounts of energy called quanta.

The translations have been carried out by Felicity Pors and Finn Aaserud at the Niels Bohr Archive in collaboration with Andrew D. Jackson and Karen Jelved. As with any translation, the precise choice of corresponding words and phrases has been difficult, a difficulty which is enhanced by the documents being unfinished notes and drafts. Therefore, although all possible care has been exercised in providing faithful translations, close attention to the original documents is strongly recommended.

Niels Bohr was a consultant on the project and believed the technology should be shared between nations within the international scientific community in order to speed up the results. Bohr tried to convince Winston Churchill of this idea and Churchill opposed it.
"Ruth Moore's is the first comprehensive biography of Niels Bohr. Addressed to a wide circle of readers, it is well written, factual, and informative and is an enthusiastic ,and exciting piece of reporting .... Moore's account of Bohr's political crusade is thorough and impressive. Many of Bohr's hopes may seem naive now, but his voice during the war was a voice of wisdom and sanity in a very dark time."
